Colton Downshop Conductor System Information
Oldest & Safest
Multiple Variations
Available in 100a & 200a Galvanised steel and 250a copper bar.
Installation
Each section of bar is 4.5m in length. Requiring a support bracket every 2.25m. This larger support spacing reduces both material and labour costs over other 4 bar systems. The preferred spacing between the bars is 65mm though the minimum spacing required can be as low as 50mm.
Support Brackets
The 1st support bracket should be positioned 150mm from the end not 500mm as is commonly believed, this gives extra support to the joints.
Configuration
The systems can be end, or center fed, and an expansion joint is required at 90m.
Support Clips
It is recommended that 1 set of support clips close to the center are support clamps this will allow the system to expand naturally in either direction.

Colton Electrical
A Potted History
Originally founded in 1937 IN Derbyshire by the Bowman family. Colton started out selling domestic equipment. Then the company found a market making and selling power connectors for a local fork-lift truck manufacturer, from here they expanded into the crane market and designed and manufactured a new shaped finger-proof bar to rival insul-8 and protected conductor.
The new shape bar soon caught on and the company decided to open an outlet in the heart of the industrial Midlands. They first approached Bob Mcloughlin to run the new business but he declined, he suggested his brother Lawrence as an alternative.
Working from small premises in Tividale they quickly grew into the largest supplier of finger proof bar in the Midlands. However, when David Bowman retired and gave the business to his son, he decided to rationalize and as a result Lawrence was made redundant. This change didn’t work very well and Colton Electrical went into liquidation in 2010. Lawrence then bought the stock and tooling off the receiver and worked from home until Granada Midlands became involved in 2012. When in 2021 the task of increasing the business profile fell to me, I immediately began by contacting Lawrence’s old customer base since then turnover of bar has increased year after year as previous customers return and new customers are found with a lot of them moving back from Hamilton POW-R-SAFE amongst others.
